Botanic Gardens & Arboretums:
The Morton Arboretum was formally established on December 14, 1922 by Mr. Joy Morton (1855-1934), owner of the Morton Salt Company. Its mission is
To collect and study trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the world, to display them across naturally beautiful landscapes, and to learn how to grow them in ways that enhance our environment. Our goal is to encourage the planting and conservation of trees and other plants for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world.
The most striking aspect of the Chicago Botanic Garden is its physical face: beautifully designed gardens brimming with two million plants. Twenty-three garden areas showcase the best plants for the Midwest displayed in a variety of beautiful settings. Three native habitat areas feature native and endangered flora of Illinois.

Pesticides:
Safe Lawn Neighborhood Alliance - The use of lawn chemicals is dramatically increasing despite alarming reports of increasing rates of cancer and the perennial threat posed to children, pets, and wildlife. According to a recent study (U.S. News 4/3/1999) the number of Americans treating their lawns has risen from 55 percent to 67 percent just in the last decade . Although many factors affect people's vulnerability to cancer, increasing pesticide use may be partially responsible for the staggering one percent per year increase in cancer rates among children (Kosary et al 1995).
Pesticide Action Network - Pesticides are hazardous to human health and the environment, undermine local and global food security and threaten agricultural biodiversity.
Yet these pervasive chemicals are aggressively promoted by multinational corporations, government agencies, and other players in this more than $35 billion a year industry.

The Illinois Solar Energy Association is a non-profit organization that promotes solar and renewable energy use and provides energy education. The Circle Gardenfarm home is an excellent example of a solar passive building designed to be very comfortable and energy efficient.
