Circle Gardenfarm is an evolving and growing model and demonstration of ecological interdependence consisting of our passive solar home/office placed within various planned gardens and habitats. Its design, which fits neatly into the surrounding neighborhood, works with natural law, forces, systems and patterns to achieve a landscape of great beauty, healthy ecological function, productivity and spiritual enrichment. It is an organic and biologically diverse landscape that produces pure whole food as well as a sense of well-being not attainable in a typical suburban yard. It points the way forward using knowledge, techniques and behaviors that anyone can adopt to improve the health of their land and their lives.

Located on 1 / 3 acre near downtown Downers Grove, Illinois and 17 miles west of Chicago, our 3000 squ. ft. passive solar home/office has gas hot water supplemental heat. It has seldom cost more than $250 per season to heat and we have never spent a winter "freezing in the dark". A windbreak of evergreen trees provides shelter from winter winds and roof overhangs shade the south windows in summer. A simple vented roof and shade trees drastically reduce and often eliminate the need for cooling.

These and many other features combine to produce efficiencies that improve our quality of life through good design. Designed 1975-77 and built in 1979, Circle Gardenfarm has functioned as a common sense, low technology demonstration of energy and resource conservation in a biologically diverse and productive landscape. Most of the carefully chosen and placed plantings have paid for themselves several times over the last 23 years. They are, and continue to be, a growing investment whose rate of return increases yearly. They are a better and safer investment than the stock market or a savings account. An investment that takes a greenhouse gas(CO2) out of the atmosphere, creates topsoil, reduces the use of rapidly diminishing fossil fuels(ancient sunlight) and gives off oxygen as a "waste" product. In addition, the entire landscape is a visual symphony that is, quite simply, a delightful experience that serves as a beacon of hope on an increasingly damaged planet.
